In a significant boost to India’s clean energy ambitions, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) has approved the construction of a dedicated jetty for green hydrogen, ammonia, and other liquid cargo at Paradip Port in Odisha.
The project, valued at Rs 797.17 crore, is set to be developed by the Paradip Port Authority on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis, marking a key milestone in the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The new facility will boast a handling capacity of 4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), positioning Paradip Port as a pivotal hub for green energy logistics. It includes a specialized jetty with a centre-to-centre distance of 279 meters between extreme end dolphins and a dredged depth of 14.3 meters, ensuring safe operations for liquid cargo vessels. Additional infrastructure encompasses storage systems, pipelines, handling equipment, and allied facilities, all designed with advanced safety measures for green energy derivatives.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal hailed the approval as a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership in fostering sustainable development. “This initiative is a direct result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji’s inspiring guidance, transforming our ports into gateways for green growth and innovation,” Sonowal stated. He emphasized that the project aligns with Modi’s goal of an Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) and environmentally responsible India.
The Paradip Port Authority will contribute 20% of the project cost, amounting to ₹159.43 crore, as capital support during construction. Officials anticipate completion within 24 months, with provisions for handling other liquid cargo to optimize utilization during the green hydrogen sector’s nascent phase. This flexibility will diversify the port’s cargo profile while supporting Odisha’s emerging green hydrogen production clusters.
Sonowal further highlighted the jetty’s role in enhancing export logistics and integrating local green energy ecosystems with global markets. “Under PM Modi’s leadership, we’re not just building infrastructure; we’re catalyzing investments, creating jobs, and establishing a robust green energy framework in eastern India,” he added.
The project is expected to attract investments in Odisha’s green infrastructure, bolstering port-based logistics for clean energy commodities. As India accelerates its transition to renewable sources, this development underscores the government’s commitment to the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to make the country a global leader in sustainable energy solutions.
