A tragic road accident near Dhamandanga village under Kantabanji police limits claimed the life of a cattle trader early Wednesday morning.
The deceased, identified as Chhabi Tandi from Dhundimahul village in Bangomunda block, was en route to the weekly cattle market in Kantabanji with two bullocks when a speeding truck rammed into him.
The impact was fatal, killing Tandi on the spot and leaving both bullocks critically injured. The truck attempted to flee but was intercepted and seized by Kantabanji police. The driver has been detained, and an investigation is underway.
Following the incident, locals and family members staged a road blockade by placing the deceased’s body on the main road, demanding compensation. After police intervention and assurance from the truck owner to provide Rs 2 lakh in compensation, the blockade was lifted.
The body was later sent to Kantabanji Medical for postmortem, while the injured bullocks remained at the accident site for hours without medical aid. The incident has sparked outrage in the region, highlighting the need for stricter road safety enforcement and better emergency response for livestock.
