Indian Railways has launched an ATM onboard the Manmad-CSMT Panchvati Express as a trial initiative aimed at increasing revenue through innovative, non-fare sources.
The project, known as ATM On Wheels, aligns with the Railway Board’s directive to explore new revenue avenues.
The trial run on April 10, 2025, saw the conversion of a mini pantry space into an ATM installation area, securely fitted with rubber pads and bolts to prevent vibration issues during transit. Fire extinguishers were also installed to ensure safety.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video of the onboard ATM, garnering widespread attention. If successful, this initiative could pave the way for similar ATM installations across long-distance trains, offering passengers convenient access to cash while travelling.
Beyond this initiative, Indian Railways continues its modernisation efforts, including track renewals, electrification, and the expansion of high-speed routes. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, more than 1,300 stations are slated for redevelopment to enhance the passenger experience.
