Carlos Alcaraz defeated Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-1 at the ATP Finals in Turin on Thursday and secured the year-end World No. 1 ranking for 2025.
The Spaniard celebrated his double-Grand Slam season with another milestone, knocking rival Jannik Sinner off the top of the standings.
Alcaraz entered the match knowing victory would guarantee his place at the summit. He delivered a commanding performance, sealing first place in the Jimmy Connors Group and ensuring he finishes the year ahead of Sinner in the updated rankings.
The 22-year-old has won 70 matches this season and captured two Grand Slam titles. He defeated Sinner in the French Open final to retain his crown and later lost to the Italian in the Wimbledon final. Their rivalry defined the season, with Alcaraz winning four of five meetings, including two Grand Slam finals.
Alcaraz expressed pride in his achievement. “It means the world to me. The year No. 1 is always a goal. At the beginning of the year, I saw it far away, Jannik winning almost every tournament. For me, it means everything. The work we put in every day, ups and downs, comebacks. I am proud of my team and myself,” he said.
Musetti, cheered on by a passionate home crowd, struggled to match Alcaraz’s intensity. He admitted fatigue after a demanding schedule. “I was tired, I needed a miracle today,” Musetti said.
Alcaraz now prepares for the semifinals, already assured of finishing 2025 as World No. 1. He aims to capture his first ATP Finals crown and possibly face Sinner again in a blockbuster finale.
