Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has indicated that he would pursue a reset in Canada’s strained relationship with India if his Liberal Party returns to power after Monday’s federal election.
Speaking at a campaign event, Carney emphasized the significance of Canada-India relations, describing them as “incredibly important” on personal, economic, and strategic levels.
Without directly mentioning the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023 — an incident that severely damaged bilateral ties — Carney suggested that differences could be addressed “with mutual respect” and that a path forward exists to rebuild trust.
He also noted the broader global context, pointing to instability in the world economy and the U.S.-China trade war, saying it creates an opportunity for nations like Canada and India to strengthen cooperation.
Carney’s remarks come just ahead of a crucial election, where his party is projected to possibly secure a majority. His comments reinforce earlier statements where he stressed diversifying Canada’s trading relationships and highlighted India as a key partner.
Senior Cabinet Ministers also echoed Carney’s stance, revealing that he has strong personal connections in New Delhi and intends to leverage them for a “major reset.”
Relations between India and Canada sharply deteriorated after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged in Parliament that Indian agents could be linked to Nijjar’s killing. Analysts suggest that tangible steps — like inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the upcoming G7 Leaders’ Summit — and possibly an independent inquiry into the Nijjar case, could help rebuild trust between the two nations.
