Bhubaneswar: Sanitary workers of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) today resorted to a cease-work protest, disrupting sanitation services in many wards of Bhubaneswar.
Gathering in significant numbers under the Rajmahal overbridge here, the workers voiced their grievances and demanded an increase in their salary to Rs 15,000. They also refused to get involved in waste segregation work.Â
They have demanded that the BMC appoint separate people to segregate the dry waste from wet waste.Â
The agitating sanitary workers alleged that the state government as well as the BMC authorities refused to concede their demands despite repeated requests for a salary hike. The sanitary workers rued that while the government has increased the salaries of nearly all sections of its employees, their demands have been neglected.Â
They also alleged that despite working outdoors under the sun and in rain, they have not been provided with protective gear. Despite ensuring that the Smart City remains clean, they are also not provided with gloves, soap, and other amenities.
