Manipur is set to witness a new chapter in its political journey as BJP leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh has been chosen to serve as the next Chief Minister.
The announcement comes just days before the expiry of President’s rule, which has been in place since February 2025 following the resignation of former CM N Biren Singh amid ethnic violence.
Khemchand Singh, a two-time MLA from the Singjamei Assembly seat, belongs to the Meitei community and has previously served as Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly (2017–2022). He also held key ministerial portfolios in the second Biren Singh cabinet, including Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Municipal Administration, Housing Development, and Education.
The BJP currently holds 37 seats in the 60-member Manipur Assembly, strengthened by defections from JD(U) MLAs. Singh’s appointment as legislature party leader in New Delhi marks the beginning of a new leadership era, pending endorsement from NDA allies.
With his experience in governance and legislative affairs, Singh is expected to steer Manipur through a crucial phase of political stability and development.
