Independent Bihar MP from Purnea, Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, was arrested by Patna Police late Friday night in connection with a 1995 forgery and property-related case, following a court-issued attachment warrant, officials said.

The arrest followed high drama at the MP’s Mandiri residence, where a large police contingent arrived around 10:30 pm. After prolonged discussions and tense exchanges between police personnel and his supporters, Yadav was taken into custody shortly after midnight.

Case Linked to Alleged Property Deception

The case, registered at Gardanibagh police station, is based on a complaint filed by Vinod Bihari Lal, who alleged that his house was rented through deception and later used as a Member of Parliament’s office—a detail he claims was concealed at the time of the agreement.

Police officials said the court issued a property attachment order after the accused failed to appear repeatedly during trial proceedings.

Police Acted on Court Directions

City Superintendent of Police Bhanu Pratap Singh said the arrest was carried out strictly in compliance with judicial orders.

“Action has been taken as per the court’s direction. The trial was underway, and the accused did not appear on scheduled dates,” he said.

Supporters Gather, Tensions Rise

During the operation, a large number of Yadav’s supporters gathered outside the residence, raising slogans against the administration and demanding that police produce arrest warrants. Officials said around 50 police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.

Yadav objected to the late-night arrest, stating that he was prepared to appear before the court the following morning. He also alleged that a police officer arrived in plain clothes and expressed concerns about his safety.

“This is a conspiracy to kill me. I respect the court and was ready to appear before it at 11 am on Saturday,” Yadav told reporters.

Medical Examination and Custody

Following his arrest, Yadav was taken to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) for a mandatory medical examination and later lodged at the Gardanibagh police station.

Police officials said he will be produced before the court later on Saturday, and further action will be taken as per judicial directions.

Responding to allegations of misconduct, City SP Singh said the police acted strictly within the framework of the law.

“If there is a valid warrant or attachment order, an arrest can be made at any time. The law has been fully complied with,” he said.

Next Hearing on Saturday

The MP-MLA court had earlier issued arrest warrants and attachment orders against three accused, including Pappu Yadav, in the case related to alleged fraudulent renting and intimidation of the property owner. The court has fixed Saturday as the next date of hearing.
