Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to initiate a comprehensive stray dog catching programme starting December 25, in response to the increasing menace posed by stray dogs in the city.
This decision comes after a significant rise in dog bite incidents, with over 500 vials of dog bite injections being used in less than two months.
Mayor Sulochana Das acknowledged the growing concern among residents, noting that the stray dog population has surged due to a temporary halt in catching operations following a High Court stay order. “The number of stray dogs has increased significantly, leading to numerous dog bite cases and accidents,” she stated.
The programme aims to address the safety concerns of Bhubaneswar’s residents, particularly the elderly and children who have been most affected. The BMC has urged local communities to cooperate with the catching teams to ensure the programme’s success. “We need the support of the locals, as our workers often face resistance while catching the dogs,” Mayor Das added.
The initiative marks a critical step towards restoring safety and order in Bhubaneswar, with the BMC committed to managing the stray dog population humanely and effectively.
