Paris witnessed an unexpected turn at the Roland Garros tournament today as French player Hugo Gaston withdrew from his second-round match due to abdominal pain.
This withdrawal propelled American tennis star Ben Shelton into the third round without playing a single point.
Gaston, who had mounted an impressive comeback in his first-round victory against fellow Frenchman Ugo Blanchet, did not mention any discomfort in his post-match press conference. However, by Tuesday, the pain prevented him from continuing his campaign at the clay-court major.
Shelton, ranked 13th in the tournament, defeated Lorenzo Sonego in his opening match and is now aiming to reach the fourth round in Paris for the first time. Last year, Shelton won his first-ever Roland Garros match against Gaston in a hard-fought four-set battle.
His next challenge will come from either 20th-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas or rising Italian talent Matteo Gigante. If Shelton advances, he will achieve the milestone of reaching at least the fourth round in all four Grand Slam tournaments.
A two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist, Shelton continues to showcase his dominance on the international tennis circuit. With Gaston out of the picture, the American now has a prime opportunity to push further into the tournament and secure a breakthrough performance at Roland Garros.
