As many as nine people, including three children, were killed in a landslide due to heavy monsoon rains in west Nepal on Saturday, as per officials.
A family of five was asleep when their home was swept away by a landslide in Malika village, located in the Gulmi district approximately 250 km (156 miles) west of Kathmandu, as stated by Dizan Bhattarai, a spokesperson for the National Disaster Rescue and Reduction Management Authority.
In the adjacent Syangja district, a woman and her three-year-old daughter died in a landslide that destroyed their home. Meanwhile, in the Baglung district, two fatalities were reported due to another landslide.
Since the onset of the annual monsoon rains in mid-June, at least 35 people throughout Nepal have lost their lives to landslides, floods, and lightning strikes.
During the monsoon season, landslides, flash floods, and lightning are frequent in the predominantly mountainous regions of Nepal, which cause the death of hundreds of people annually.
