The bodies of four workers trapped inside a coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district were recovered.
The first body was brought out from the mine in Umrangsu on Wednesday. These workers were part of a group of nine who became trapped in the mine on Monday after a sudden influx of water flooded the quarry.
Efforts to dewater the quarry, which is approximately 310 feet deep, are ongoing, with specialized machines brought in by ONGC and Coal India. Multiple teams from various central and state organizations, along with all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces—the Army, Navy, and Air Force—are participating in the rescue operation.
Rescuers reported that the water flooding the 3 Kilo Coal Quarry in Umrangsu has become acidic and murky due to mixing with coal. This has created significant challenges for visibility and manoeuvrability, even for the Navy team, which includes clearance divers trained in deep-water diving and recovery operations.
