India are set to begin their Asia Cup 2025 campaign against UAE with a pace-dominant strategy, leaving star wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav out of the playing XI.
Kuldeep, who last featured for India in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand earlier this year, has been sidelined once again — this time due to Dubai’s seamer-friendly pitch conditions. Unlike the slow, turning tracks of the Champions Trophy, the surface at Dubai International Stadium is sporting a greenish tinge, prompting India to rethink their spin-heavy approach.
Bowling coach Morne Morkel confirmed that team selection will depend on match-day conditions but hinted that India would stick to a plan focused on seam. “There’s quite a bit of grass covering on the square. We’ll have a better idea after our last look at the surface, but we are covering all bases and will finalise the XI on match day,” Morkel said.
Varun Chakaravarthy Lone Specialist Spinner
Varun Chakaravarthy is expected to be India’s only frontline spinner, with Axar Patel handling secondary spin duties. Abhishek Sharma can also chip in with his left-arm spin if needed.
Morkel acknowledged Kuldeep’s professionalism despite limited opportunities, praising his preparation and work ethic.
Batting Depth & All-Round Strength
India head coach Gautam Gambhir continues to favour batting depth. Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, and likely Shivam Dube will form the all-round core. Dube’s inclusion provides a seam-bowling option and strengthens India’s middle order.
In the wicketkeeper’s slot, Jitesh Sharma is set to edge out Sanju Samson, adding a power-hitting option at No. 7.
Pace Attack Key
Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh will spearhead India’s pace attack. A third seamer, Harshit Rana, is also in contention but may have to wait unless India opt for extra pace on match day.
With a fast-bowling-friendly pitch, India are betting on their seamers to make the difference, even if it means leaving out one of their most successful recent spinners.
