The inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Angul cyber police station narrowly escaped serious injury after a bus driver allegedly attempted to run him over in what police suspect was a deliberate act. The incident occurred late on December 18, and a criminal case has been registered, officials said on Sunday.
The officer, identified as Khaleswar Sethi, was returning home after duty around 11.30 pm when the incident took place near Budhi Thakurani Chhak in Angul district. According to police sources, a bus allegedly sped towards him in a manner suggesting an intentional attempt to hit him.
Inspector Sethi managed to move aside at the last moment, avoiding serious harm. Police officials said the manner in which the vehicle approached raised strong suspicion of a planned attack rather than an accident.
Allegations of Verbal Abuse and Caste-Based Remarks
The complaint further alleges that after the failed attempt, the bus driver and two other individuals travelling in the vehicle got down and confronted the officer. During the exchange, the accused allegedly abused him verbally and made caste-based derogatory remarks.
Following the confrontation, Inspector Sethi informed the Angul police station. Another officer was immediately dispatched to the spot to ensure his safety.
Case Registered, Probe Underway
Inspector Sethi later filed a formal complaint at the police station. Based on his statement, police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to determine the full sequence of events.
Officials said efforts are underway to identify the bus involved and trace the driver and the two other individuals named in the complaint. CCTV footage from nearby areas and other technical evidence are being examined as part of the probe.
Senior police officials stated that further legal action will be taken once the preliminary investigation is completed. As of the latest update, the accused have not yet been traced.
