Amaravati: At least 9 people, including 5 women, were killed after the bus, they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a canal in the West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday.
According to reports, the bus carrying 47 passengers was en route to Jangareddygudem from Aswaraopeta. Meanwhile, the driver lost control over the wheels and the vehicle plunged into the Jalleru Wagu canal.
The bus was trying to avoid a lorry from the opposite side when it lost control and overturned, said sources.
On being informed, Police reached the spot and launched a rescue operation.
So far, nine bodies have been recovered, while another 38 persons were rescued and admitted to a nearby hospital.
Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan expressed anguish and grief over the accident near Jalleru in Jangareddigudem Mandal in West Godavari district.
The Governor has instructed district officials to provide immediate aid to the injured and offered his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
