A pregnant woman battling labor pains had to be transported by tractor after an ambulance got stuck nearly 2 kilometres away due to rain-ravaged roads in Mundibeda Panchayat’s Khidingimal village in Nabarangpur district.
The woman, wife of Sukaram Gond, went into labor late at night. Despite the family’s emergency call, the ambulance was unable to access the village due to slippery, muddy terrain. Determined to save her, family members transported her on a tractor through jungle paths, using mobile torchlight for navigation.
She was then transferred to the waiting ambulance and admitted to Gona Health Centre, where she delivered a healthy baby boy. Medical staff confirmed both mother and newborn are safe.
This incident sheds light on the recurring infrastructural challenges in Raighar block’s tribal areas, especially during monsoons. Locals voiced frustration that despite heavy spending on rural development, roads remain unchanged. Alleged lack of administrative oversight has led to stagnation and growing corruption.
Residents are demanding direct intervention from the state and district administration, seeking urgent repair of critical village roads and better accountability for rural development funds.
