Superstar-turned-statesman Vijay has officially stepped onto the political battlefield, with his party Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) announcing him as its chief ministerial candidate for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The declaration came on Friday during the party’s executive committee meeting in Panayur.
Releasing a resolution, Vijay made his stance clear: TVK will neither align with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nor the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), slamming both for what he called “selfish political interests.”
“TVK is neither DMK nor AIADMK to shake hands and have an alliance with the BJP,” Vijay stated firmly. “There will be no compromise—this is a firm resolution.”
The actor also launched a scathing critique of the BJP’s communal tactics, claiming they wouldn’t work in a state “rooted in social justice, harmony, and brotherhood.”
TVK, which officially launched in February 2024, had earlier announced that it would not contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, instead focusing on building a robust ground network. Now, with Vijay at the forefront, the party is positioning itself as a credible third front to disrupt Tamil Nadu’s traditional two-party stronghold.
With a mass following and a clean political debut, Vijay faces a tall order—challenging Chief Minister MK Stalin and the entrenched DMK machinery. However, TVK leaders remain optimistic, citing the actor’s popularity and uncompromising ideology as the party’s biggest strengths.
TVK General Secretary N. Anand added that Vijay will embark on a statewide tour beginning in September, with the party’s second state conference scheduled for August.
As Tamil Nadu gears up for 2026, all eyes will be on whether ‘Thalapathy’ can translate cinematic charisma into political clout—and rewrite the narrative of Dravidian politics.
