Actor Manoj Mishra Raises Theatre Crisis in Odisha Before Aamir Khan at IFFI

The challenges of the Odia film industry took centre stage at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa when actor Manoj Mishra directly raised the shortage of cinema halls in Odisha during an interaction with Bollywood star Aamir Khan.

Mishra explained that the absence of functional theatres has forced filmmakers to release films in villages. For example, he cited his recent film Mindgame, which he had to screen in rural pockets because many towns lacked operational halls.

“We have many talented actors, directors, and technicians,” Mishra said. Furthermore, he added that while Aamir Khan has shown interest in promoting Indian entries at the Oscars, Odia artistes also aspire to take their films to global platforms but often feel unsupported.

In addition, Mishra shared his experience of screening films in difficult conditions. He noted, “When I screen a movie at a place where there are no ACs or fans, but the audience is still watching it while drenched in sweat, it means that I made a good film. If people like Aamir Khan support independent filmmakers like us, then Indian films will not only be screened in festivals but will establish business.”

Responding to the concerns, Aamir Khan acknowledged the issue and said the matter is receiving attention at the national level. Moreover, he remarked, “The Government of India is looking into that seriously. If theatres are made in every State, then it would be a great boost for the cinemas.”
