Odisha Records 29% Excess Monsoon Rainfall While India Faces 13% Deficit

Against a normal seasonal expectation of 868.6 mm, the country received 759.4 mm of rainfall.

However, Odisha stood out as an exception, recording a remarkable 29% excess rainfall compared to the seasonal average. The state accumulated 1,482.3 mm of rainfall against its normal benchmark of 1,150.2 mm, placing it firmly in the “excess” category.

Regional Contrast Across the Country

While parts of North and East India received normal to surplus rainfall, western and southern states faced significant deficits. States like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu recorded below-normal precipitation. Conversely, Odisha, along with select northeastern states and West Bengal, enjoyed a bountiful monsoon season, IMD’s regional rainfall maps show.

Weather Forecast and IMD Warnings

The Regional Meteorological Centre predicts light to moderate rainfall or thunderstorms at isolated places across several districts over the coming days.

• Yellow Warning: A yellow alert has been issued for Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, and a few other districts until the morning of October 2, accompanied by lightning and surface wind speeds reaching 30 to 40 km/h.

• October 2 to October 6: No major weather warnings are in place, though scattered light-to-moderate showers are expected. Overall weather conditions are anticipated to stabilise.

Flood Relief and Safety Advisory

With rainfall activity slowing down over the past few days, relief and rescue operations remain active in flood-affected regions. Thousands of displaced residents have been safely relocated to temporary relief camps.

Authorities have advised citizens to stay updated on weather forecasts and avoid travelling through waterlogged roads. While the end of the monsoon brings stabilising weather to Odisha, the significant surplus remains a notable highlight of the season.
