Vandana Katariya, a name synonymous with Indian women’s hockey, announced her retirement from international hockey on April 1, 2025.

At 32, Vandana leaves the global stage with a remarkable legacy, boasting 320 international appearances and 158 goals, making her the most-capped player in Indian women’s hockey history.

Her historic hat-trick at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the first and only by an Indian woman, stands out as a highlight in her illustrious career. Vandana’s exceptional performance helped propel India to a commendable fourth-place finish in the Olympics, inspiring countless young athletes across the nation.

In an emotional social media post, Vandana expressed her gratitude to her mentors, teammates, and her late father, crediting them for their pivotal roles in her journey. She emphasized that her decision to retire was motivated by the desire to end her international career on a high note, rather than due to physical or emotional burnout.

While stepping away from international hockey, Vandana is not bidding adieu to the sport entirely. She plans to continue competing in domestic leagues, including the prestigious Hockey India League, ensuring her presence and passion for hockey remain undiminished.

Her retirement marks the end of an era but also heralds the continuation of her inspiring journey in a different capacity. Vandana Katariya leaves behind an indelible mark on Indian sports history, and her legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
