STF, Wildlife Crime Bureau Launch Trafficking Probe After Five Orangutans Found Abandoned in Baleshwar

In a bizarre and unprecedented wildlife incident that has sent shockwaves across Odisha, local authorities rescued five infant orangutans from the Casuarina forest in the Bichitrapur area of Baleshwar district’s Bhograi block.

The discovery has triggered a high-stakes international wildlife trafficking investigation.

The Special Task Force (STF) of the Odisha Police has jumped into action, deploying a specialised team to Baleshwar to crack the case. STF Inspector General Himansu Lal confirmed that an intensive probe is underway to determine how the exotic primates ended up in a remote coastal forest.

Local villagers first spotted the young apes clinging to trees on Tuesday morning and immediately alerted the forest department. Thousands of curious locals soon flocked to the scene, prompting a swift rescue operation led by Balasore Divisional Forest Officer Prateek Prakash Indalkar.

Wildlife experts estimate the rescued group comprises three males and two females, aged between six months and one year, standing roughly one to one-and-a-half feet tall. Following initial veterinary health checks, four of the infants were reported stable and active, while the fifth is under intensive observation. All are currently receiving food and oral rehydration solutions.

A New Chapter for Nandankanan Zoo

The five infant apes have since been safely transferred to the Nandankanan Zoological Park near Bhubaneswar, where they are being kept in quarantine.

The arrival marks a major milestone for the zoo, which has kept its specialised orangutan enclosure empty for years. Nandankanan’s sole resident orangutan—a female brought from the Pune zoo in 2003—died in 2019 at the age of 41. Long-term housing and care plans for the new arrivals are currently being evaluated by state and central authorities.

An International Trafficking Angle

Because orangutans are not native to India and are naturally found only in the tropical rainforests of Borneo, Sumatra (Indonesia), and Malaysia, forest officials immediately ruled out local origins. The species is listed as critically endangered.

State Forest Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia noted that international wildlife smuggling syndicates are heavily suspected. With each baby orangutan fetching an estimated international black-market value of 20 to 25 lakh rupees, authorities believe traffickers abandoned the cargo in a panic while fleeing interception. Smugglers may have smuggled the animals via maritime routes, air, or rail before dumping them in the coastal thickets.

A multi-agency task force comprising the Forest Department, the Wildlife Crime Bureau, and the STF is combing the region for further evidence. Security footage from airports, railway stations, and nearby ports has also been ordered for review as the state launches its first-ever investigation into exotic ape trafficking.
