A tragic accident struck West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Friday morning when a train collided with a school van at the Karnasubarna railway crossing in Berhampore, killing three students and injuring several others.
The incident occurred around 7 AM as the van attempted to cross the tracks. Witnesses said the crossing was open at the time, and the train hit the vehicle with force, spinning it around and killing three children instantly.
Rescue teams rushed the injured to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, where several remain in critical condition, raising fears that the death toll could rise.
Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region Sukanta Majumdar expressed grief over the deaths and demanded a detailed inquiry. He stressed that accountability must be fixed and urged the Railways to conduct a separate investigation into the circumstances of the collision.
Authorities have tightened safety measures at the site, while police continue to probe the incident.
