Dhenkanal: The 125th edition of the Joranda Magha Mela began today at Mahima Gadi in Joranda, marking a significant milestone for the Mahima sect and the wider community. Organized annually since 1876, this revered event has drawn thousands of Mahima followers and saints for a two-day celebration filled with traditional rituals and cultural fervor.

The festivities officially commenced on the Shukla Paksha Chaturdashi of the Magha month. In a symbolic evening ritual, the “Jhada Dipar” was lit using quintals of ghee at Mahima Gadi and in the vicinity of Shunya Mandir, illuminating the spiritual significance of the occasion.

In anticipation of the large gathering, the district administration and police have put extensive arrangements in place to ensure the smooth conduct of the mela. A dedicated barricade has been set up in front of the Gadi Mandir, and vendors from across the state have arrived to offer a variety of stalls for the fair. Dhenkanal SP Abhinav Sonkar confirmed, “Ten platoons of police and four platoons of home guard, along with 50 additional officers, have been deployed to manage the event. Special provisions have also been made for five temples, with the main temple, Gadi Mandir, featuring specific arrangements at its entry and exit points to facilitate seamless transactions.”

The Joranda Magha Mela is celebrated annually by the followers of Mahima Swami, the founder of the Mahima sect. After his demise, his devotees constructed a temple on his grave without an entrance, reflecting their belief that God transcends physical form and cannot be confined to a specific shape, size, caste, or color.

As the celebrations continue, the mela stands as a testament to enduring cultural traditions and the deep spiritual heritage of the region.
