A tragic accident occurred Tuesday morning at Baribandh village square on National Highway‑55, when a speeding iron‑laden truck lost control and rammed into a house, killing a woman and critically injuring her young daughter.
The deceased has been identified as Dipanjali Bhoi (35), while her two‑and‑a‑half‑year‑old daughter Manjulata sustained serious injuries. Witnesses said the mother and child were sitting outside their home around 7 AM when the truck (registration number MH‑40‑CM‑6003) veered off the road and crashed into the house. Dipanjali died instantly, while the child was rushed to hospital for treatment.
The accident triggered tension in the locality. Residents blocked the highway demanding immediate construction of speed breakers and adequate compensation for the bereaved family. The blockade disrupted traffic for hours.
Officials, including Tahasildar Prabhas Budhayak, BJP leader Sasmita Dehuri, and police from Dhanupali and Sadar stations, reached the spot to pacify the crowd. The Tahasildar provided ₹20,000 interim relief from the district Red Cross fund and assured further assistance through insurance and administrative channels.
The tragedy has devastated the family, already reeling from the earlier death of the child’s father. Now orphaned, Manjulata’s care falls on her elderly grandparents. Leaders have urged the government and vehicle owner to extend financial support for her upbringing and education.
