A man was allegedly subjected to third-degree torture by the Town Police in Bhadrak district and subsequently hospitalized.

The victim has been identified as Jiban Jena.

The incident occurred following a domestic dispute on February 5, 20251. Jena’s wife, Rubina Nayak, accused eight to nine police officers of using excessive force. According to Nayak, the police used a sharp-edged weapon to inflict injuries on Jena’s body. The police defended their actions, citing Jena’s aggressive behaviour due to intoxication

Police admitted Jena to the hospital after he was severely beaten. Later, fearing that the incident would come to light, the police immediately sent him straight to jail. Such serious allegations have been made against Bhadrak Town Police.

According to the complaint, on the afternoon of 5th February, Jena was arguing with his wife after drinking heavily near the Bhadrak Town police station at Motel Chhak when a lady police constable in civilian dress who was present there went to resolve the dispute between the husband and wife and was attacked.

The lady constable called the PCR. When the PCR arrived and tried to take Jena to the police station, he and his wife protested strongly against the police arrest. This created a lot of tension at the scene. The police also arrested Jena and took him to the police station.

In order to provoke the anger, the police arrested Jiban late at night and charged him with third-degree assault, according to Rubina. Jiban, who was beaten up by the police and admitted to the hospital, was found with marks of assault all over his body when his relatives came to visit him at the hospital.

However, fearing that the incident would come to light, the police rushed Jiban to court in midnight, his wife Rubina alleged. However, no response was received from the police regarding the incident.
