The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a detailed weather alert for Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall across multiple districts over the next several days.

Residents have been advised to stay cautious, especially during afternoon and evening hours when weather activity is expected to intensify.

Multiple Districts Under Yellow and Orange Alerts

The IMD has placed several districts under Yellow Warning, indicating thunderstorms with gusty winds ranging between 40–50 km/h. Meanwhile, districts such as Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Gajapati, and Rayagada are under Orange Warning, signaling the likelihood of more intense weather conditions including lightning, hailstorms, and wind speeds up to 60 km/h.

Day-Wise Weather Forecast (May 2 – May 8, 2026)

Day 1 (May 2)

Light to moderate rainfall is expected across coastal and southern districts like Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati. Intense thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds may occur in the afternoon and evening, particularly in northern and southern interior regions.

Day 2 (May 2–3)

Rainfall activity will continue in several districts, while some areas may experience dry conditions. Thunderstorms with gusty winds up to 50 km/h are likely in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Ganjam.

Day 3 (May 3–4)

Weather conditions remain unstable with scattered rainfall. Thunderstorms are expected in Rayagada, Koraput, Ganjam, and Gajapati, along with gusty winds reaching 40–50 km/h.

Day 4 (May 4–5)

Rain and thunderstorms will spread to western districts such as Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, and Deogarh. Southern districts may witness stronger winds and lightning activity.

Day 5 (May 5–6)

Coastal districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur are likely to experience thunderstorms with gusty winds. A Yellow Warning remains in effect.

Day 6 (May 6–7)

Thunderstorm activity will persist, particularly in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, and Mayurbhanj. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities during peak hours.

Day 7 (May 7–8)

Light to moderate rainfall is expected in coastal and adjoining districts. Thunderstorms with winds up to 30–40 km/h may impact Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, and Cuttack.

Safety Advisory for Residents

Authorities urge people to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees, and secure loose objects to prevent damage from strong winds. Farmers and fishermen are also advised to stay updated with local weather bulletins.

Outlook: Active Weather Pattern Continues

The ongoing weather activity is part of a seasonal thunderstorm pattern often seen during pre-monsoon months. The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as required.
