The Rourkela Shramik Sangh staged a strong protest on Monday against the Ministry of Steel’s alleged decision to retrench nearly 40 per cent of employees and contractual workers at the Rourkela Steel Plant.

Union members gathered in front of the RSP Administrative Building, raising slogans and blocking entry to the premises.

The agitation escalated when several workers lay down on the road, preventing officials from entering the building. The demonstration reflected growing anger among the workforce, who fear massive job losses if the retrenchment plan moves forward.

To ease tensions, RSP Executive Director Tarun Kanti Mishra reached the protest site and held discussions with union representatives. Following the talks, the demonstrators withdrew their agitation for the day.

Union leaders, however, issued a stern warning. They declared that if the Ministry of Steel does not withdraw the retrenchment plan, the agitation will intensify in the coming days. The Shramik Sangh emphasised that the livelihoods of thousands of families depend on the plant and vowed to resist any move that threatens employment security.

The protest has drawn attention to the broader challenges facing the steel sector, where restructuring and cost‑cutting measures often spark clashes between management and workers. Observers noted that the Rourkela agitation could set the tone for similar demonstrations in other industrial hubs if retrenchment policies continue.
