Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become India’s longest-serving head of government, completing 8,931 days in office.
This milestone surpasses the previous record held by former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, who served 8,930 days.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated Modi on social media, calling the achievement “remarkable” and a reflection of his “pure devotion to the nation and its people.” Singh highlighted Modi’s journey from Gujarat’s longest-serving Chief Minister to India’s Prime Minister, noting his governance approach as centred on “nation-first” principles.
Modi first took office as Gujarat Chief Minister on October 7, 2001, and served until May 21, 2014. On May 26, 2014, he became India’s 14th Prime Minister, making history as the first non-Congress leader to secure a full majority in the Lok Sabha. He later became the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete two full terms and return for a third consecutive term.
Born after Independence, Modi is also the first Prime Minister with extensive prior experience as a Chief Minister. His three consecutive Lok Sabha victories in 2014, 2019, and 2024 underline his sustained electoral support.
