The Meteorological Centre issued a heavy rain alert for Odisha, warning of intense showers over the next 24 hours due to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal.
Officials identified Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, and Mayurbhanj districts as vulnerable areas. These regions may experience strong winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 km per hour, along with heavy rainfall. Authorities urged residents to remain cautious as the yellow warning remains in effect.
On Tuesday, several districts recorded significant rainfall. Mayurbhanj’s Jashipur registered 40.4 mm, Keonjhar’s Champua 29.4 mm, Gajapati’s R. Udayagiri 28.2 mm, Bhubaneswar 17.6 mm, and Koraput’s Patangi 11.2 mm. Cities such as Baripada, Paradip, Daringbadi, and Balangir also witnessed thunderstorms accompanied by lightning.
The weather office explained that the low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal is gradually moving eastward and will weaken later today. Despite this, the impact of the system continues to trigger rainfall across coastal and adjoining districts.
The heavy rain alert highlights the need for preparedness in vulnerable areas. Farmers, fishermen, and residents in low-lying regions have been advised to stay alert and avoid risky outdoor activities during the period of intense showers.
