A low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours, raising concerns of heavy rainfall across Odisha.
The Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre confirmed the development of a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Indian Ocean. Once the low-pressure system forms, it may move northwestwards, influencing weather conditions across the state.
Authorities issued a yellow warning for 15 districts, including Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Jajpur, Puri, Cuttack, Khordha, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, and Malkangiri. These regions may experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
The weather department forecast rainfall activity beginning on February 23. Thunderstorms with lightning are expected in several districts, while Khordha, Cuttack, and Mayurbhanj may see intensified conditions on February 24.
The low-pressure alert has prompted caution among residents and farmers. The possibility of heavy showers could impact agricultural activities and daily life. Meteorologists continue monitoring the system’s movement and intensity, as its exact impact remains uncertain.
This low-pressure alert underscores the vulnerability of Odisha’s coastal districts to sudden weather changes. Preparedness and timely updates will be crucial in minimising risks.
