Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Tarique Rahman after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a decisive victory in the country’s parliamentary elections.

In a message posted on X, Modi extended his warm wishes to Rahman for leading the BNP to a clear mandate. He said the outcome reflects the trust placed by the people of Bangladesh in Rahman’s leadership.

“India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working together to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our shared development goals,” the Prime Minister stated.

BNP Secures Majority

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party emerged as the leading political force as vote counting progressed across the country. According to the latest figures, BNP and its allies secured 177 seats out of 237 constituencies where counting has been completed. Results for the remaining 62 seats are still awaited.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies won 53 constituencies, based on available data.

First National Vote Since 2024 Uprising

The elections mark Bangladesh’s first parliamentary polls since the 2024 student-led uprising that led to the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government. The vote was widely viewed as a significant moment in the nation’s democratic process.

India and Bangladesh share deep historical, cultural, and economic ties. With the BNP poised to form the next government, both nations are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in trade, connectivity, regional security, and development initiatives.

As Bangladesh moves forward under its new leadership, India has reiterated its commitment to supporting a stable, democratic, and inclusive neighbour in South Asia.
