The annual crocodile census at Bhitarkanika National Park, Odisha’s famed estuarine crocodile habitat, has reported an increase in population.
The latest count shows 1,858 crocodiles, up by 32 from last year’s 1,826.
Forest officials confirmed that the census was conducted between January 8 and 10 by 22 teams under the leadership of senior biologist Dr Siba Prasad Parida. The teams recorded crocodiles across rivers, creeks, and water bodies inside and outside the park.
During the census, officials spotted several giant crocodiles, including specimens over 20 feet long near Patasala mouth, FRH Jeti, and Gupti–Hansina. Crocodiles measuring more than 15 feet were also sighted near Jaynagar–Khola, Balipatha, Thanapatimouth, Ganjeikhia, Shuajor, Godharapal, and Gumuragaon.
Age-Wise Census Data
- Hatchlings (below 2 ft): 531

Divisional Forest Officer Varadaraj Gaonkar stated that the increase reflects effective conservation measures and the park’s healthy ecosystem. Bhitarkanika continues to be recognised as the “paradise of estuarine crocodiles” and remains one of India’s most important wildlife habitats.
