Doctors at Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar wore black badges on Saturday while continuing outpatient department (OPD) services, staging a silent protest against the recent assault on an on-duty doctor.

The Junior Doctors’ Association organised the protest to demand stronger security arrangements for government doctors.

The protest followed an incident in which a patient’s relative attacked a doctor inside the hospital premises, injuring him and a supporting staff member. The assault triggered widespread anger among healthcare workers, who said such attacks are becoming increasingly frequent.

Despite their protest, doctors clarified that patient care would not be disrupted. However, they warned that if the government fails to ensure adequate security, OPD services could be suspended in the coming days.

Health Secretary Aswathy S visited Capital Hospital to review the situation. Speaking to the media, she said: “Doctors’ security is our responsibility. We will take all necessary steps to ensure they are protected. We are also consulting the police, and I hope those involved in the assault will be arrested as soon as possible.”

Doctors demanded deployment of more security personnel, strict action against attackers, and legal protection for healthcare workers.

The incident once again highlighted the vulnerability of doctors in public hospitals. Healthcare professionals stressed the urgent need to create a safer working environment while ensuring uninterrupted patient care.
