A construction crane collapsed onto a passenger train in northeastern Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima province on Wednesday, killing at least 22 people and injuring 64 others.

The train was travelling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani when the accident occurred.

The crane, which was being used for the construction of an elevated high-speed railway, fell directly onto the moving train. As a result, the train derailed and caught fire, trapping passengers inside. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and worked to extinguish the flames while pulling survivors from the wreckage.

Officials from the Nakhon Ratchasima Public Relations Department confirmed the rising death toll and reported that several injured passengers remain in critical condition. Emergency services transported the wounded to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.

Moreover, authorities launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crane collapse. Engineers and safety experts will examine whether structural faults or operational negligence contributed to the disaster.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s transport ministry expressed condolences to the families of the victims and pledged strict safety reviews of ongoing railway construction projects. The government emphasised that ensuring passenger safety remains its top priority.

This tragic accident has shaken public confidence in large-scale infrastructure projects. Families of victims and survivors continue to demand accountability and stronger safety measures to prevent similar disasters in the future.
