The Excise Department seized 1.5 quintals of ganja during a major raid in Kundheidiha village under Gurundia block of Bonai subdivision in Sundargarh district.
Officials discovered illegal cannabis cultivation on forest land and recovered large quantities hidden behind the accused’s house for sale.
Acting on a tip-off, excise officers from Banai, Rourkela, and Lahuni Pada launched a joint operation early in the morning. They seized ganja worth an estimated Rs 15 lakh. Authorities confirmed that the contraband was intended for illegal trade.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Ranjit Oram (32) and Rajesh Oram (27) of Kundheidiha village. Both face charges of ganja smuggling and illegal cultivation.
The crackdown highlights the department’s intensified efforts to curb the rising menace of illegal cannabis trade in the region. Officials stated that further investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and identify other individuals involved in the racket.
Local residents expressed relief over the raid, noting that illegal ganja cultivation had become a growing concern in the area. The Excise Department reiterated its commitment to continue strict enforcement against narcotics trafficking.
