A shocking incident of violence has marred the serene beauty of Shikharchandi Hill, one of Bhubaneswar’s most beloved picnic and tourist destinations, turning it into a site of concern for visitors and locals alike.

Known for its lush greenery, panoramic views of the city, and the ancient Maa Shikharachandi Temple atop the hill, the spot attracts large crowds of tourists and picnickers, especially during the New Year season. However, rising incidents of antisocial behavior have raised alarms about safety and environmental degradation.

According to reports, a group of individuals claiming to be “local goons” recently assaulted a security guard deployed at the hill to ensure the safety of visitors. The guard, stationed to manage the growing footfall, was allegedly beaten severely, resulting in a head injury. The attack occurred while the guard was on duty, possibly during efforts to address littering or other violations.

The injured guard was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries. Police have registered a complaint and launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the culprits.

Environmental Concerns Add to the Woes

Beyond the assault, Shikharachandi Hill is facing severe pollution from tourist littering. Videos and reports show plastic bottles, plates, and other waste scattered across the hilltop, harming the local ecosystem and wildlife. The influx of visitors has led to unchecked garbage disposal, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of cleanliness rules and increased monitoring.

Local residents and environmentalists have condemned the incident, demanding enhanced security arrangements, including more guards and CCTV surveillance, to protect both visitors and personnel. They also urge the Odisha government to take immediate steps to preserve the site’s natural beauty and ensure it remains a safe, welcoming destination.

Police Response and Public Reaction

Authorities have assured that efforts are underway to trace the attackers and prevent future occurrences. “We are treating this seriously and will ensure strict action against those responsible,” a police spokesperson said.

Residents have echoed the demand for better law and order at popular spots like Shikharachandi, warning that unchecked antisocial activities could deter tourism and damage the hill’s reputation as a peaceful retreat.

As Bhubaneswar’s tourism continues to grow, this incident serves as a wake-up call for authorities to balance development with safety and sustainability. Visitors are urged to respect the environment and cooperate with security personnel to keep such scenic locations pristine and secure.

Shikharachandi Hill remains open to the public, but heightened vigilance is advised for all visitors during peak seasons.
