Former Union Minister and founder of People for Animals, Maneka Gandhi, shared a powerful story that shaped her life.

Speaking at the 16th Rajkishore Nayak Memorial Lecture at Jayadev Bhavan in Bhubaneswar, she recalled the moment that turned her into a lifelong vegetarian.

She said she married young and ate meat, even while passionately speaking about protecting animals. One evening, her husband challenged her: “You cannot talk about animal safety all day and eat meat at night. Either stop eating meat or stop speaking about animal protection.”

The words pierced her heart. That night, she cried and made a life-changing decision. She gave up non-vegetarian food forever, choosing compassion over contradiction. From then on, she aligned her lifestyle with her beliefs and embraced vegetarianism as a true reflection of her values.

Maneka Gandhi explained that the conflict between her words and actions had troubled her deeply. She realised that genuine commitment to animal welfare demanded personal sacrifice. Her choice symbolised both conviction and compassion.

She stressed that vegetarianism is more than diet—it is about living consistently with one’s principles. Linking her decision to her lifelong advocacy for animal rights, she highlighted how discipline strengthens activism and inspires others.

Her story illustrated the power of introspection and the courage to live in harmony with one’s values. She urged people to reflect on their own choices and consider how their habits affect animals and society.

Reacting to the Supreme Court’s order on stray dogs, Maneka Gandhi sharply criticised the judgment. She argued that the judges had erred by dividing the country into two groups—those who care for animals and those who do not. Gandhi stressed that the Animal Welfare Act remains a strong law and has not been repealed. She noted that the order, however, permits actions against the law, which she described as unacceptable.
