The Vigilance Court in Sambalpur convicted Dr Sanat Kumar Mohapatra, former Head of the Surgery Department at VSS Medical College & Hospital, Burla (Retired), for bribery.
To begin, the Special Judge, Vigilance, sentenced Dr Mohapatra to one year of rigorous imprisonment and a fine after finding him guilty under Section 13(2) read with 13(1)(d)/7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
Next, Odisha Vigilance charge-sheeted Dr Mohapatra for demanding and accepting a bribe from a patient in exchange for performing surgery. The conviction underscores the state’s determination to curb corruption in public institutions.
Furthermore, Vigilance officials announced that they will move the competent authority to stop Dr Mohapatra’s pension, in line with rules governing retired government employees convicted of corruption.
Finally, the case sends a strong message against malpractice in the healthcare sector, reinforcing Odisha Vigilance’s commitment to accountability and integrity.
