The Forest Wing of Odisha Vigilance conducted a surprise raid on Monday in the Madhapur Forest Range under Boudh Forest Division, resulting in the seizure of a leopard (Panthera pardus) skin and the arrest of a hunter.
Acting on reliable intelligence, the vigilance team swiftly moved into action and detected the illegal possession of the protected animal’s skin. The accused, identified as Jaya Nayak, was apprehended on the spot. He has been charged with violations under Section 9 and punishable under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which prohibits hunting, possession, and trade of scheduled species like the leopard.
The leopard, listed under Schedule I of the Act, receives the highest level of protection due to its vulnerable status. Such seizures highlight ongoing challenges in combating poaching and illegal wildlife trade in Odisha’s forest regions.
Investigation into the case is underway, with authorities probing potential links to larger networks. A further detailed report is awaited as the probe progresses.
