DThe Satya Nagar crematorium in Bhubaneswar has undergone a major transformation with a ₹3.32 crore renovation, significantly improving facilities and amenities for the public. The upgraded crematorium was inaugurated on Friday by Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, along with Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Sulochana Das.

Upgraded Infrastructure for Dignified Last Rites

For several years, the crematorium remained in a dilapidated condition, causing hardship to families during emotionally difficult times. The redevelopment project aims to ensure a clean, dignified, and well-equipped space for performing last rites.

A key highlight of the makeover is the introduction of a gas-based cremation system, which enables environment-friendly and efficient cremations. The facility has also been expanded with multiple new infrastructures to improve overall functionality and comfort.

New Facilities Introduced

As part of the redevelopment, the following amenities have been added:

  • A pond within the premises

  • A temple for religious observances

  • Modern toilets for public convenience

  • A dedicated rituals and prayer hall for funeral ceremonies

Officials said these additions address long-standing civic gaps and align the crematorium with modern urban service standards.

Cremation Charges and Welfare Support

The cremation fee at the Satya Nagar crematorium has been fixed at ₹2,000. However, Mayor Sulochana Das clarified that families holding ration cards will be eligible for free cremation services under the Harischandra Yojana, a state welfare scheme supporting economically vulnerable households.

Easing Pressure on City Cremation Grounds

Civic officials noted that the upgraded facility will help reduce pressure on other cremation grounds across Bhubaneswar while ensuring better services for grieving families.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Mahapatra said the redevelopment was long overdue. “The development of the Satya Nagar crematorium was necessary. Essential infrastructure such as toilets and a pond has now been created to serve the public better,” he said.
