Delhi Celebrates Diwali 2025 Amid Toxic Air and GRAP-2 Restrictions: AQI Dips to ‘Very Poor’ Category

Delhi welcomed Diwali 2025 with dazzling lights, festive cheer, and unfortunately, toxic air. On Sunday evening, the city’s air quality slipped into the “very poor” category, prompting authorities to enforce Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-2) across Delhi-NCR.

Delhi’s Air Quality Turns Hazardous

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Air Quality Index (AQI) in many parts of Delhi crossed the 300 mark on Sunday night, with Anand Vihar recording an alarming AQI of 414, which falls under the “severe” category. By contrast, Sri Aurobindo Marg registered the cleanest air in the city at an AQI of 158.

As of 6 a.m. on Monday, 29 stations in the city reported “very poor” air quality, four stations were in the “poor” category, and only one monitoring point remained “moderate.”

Why Delhi’s Pollution Spiked

Officials said that pollution from nearby NCR towns significantly contributed to the city’s worsening air. Firecracker use, vehicular emissions, and changing weather conditions have further intensified the smog.

Under GRAP-2 restrictions, several measures are now in place:

  • Stricter control on the use of diesel generator sets

  • Higher parking fees to discourage private vehicle use

  • Ban on non-BS-VI diesel and non-CNG buses entering Delhi

  • Enhanced road cleaning and anti-pollution drives

Green Crackers Permitted Under Supervision

This year, the Supreme Court allowed the sale and use of green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR during Diwali under controlled conditions. Residents were permitted to burst crackers only between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Diwali and the day before.

Weather and Temperature Update

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 33.3°C — slightly above normal — while the minimum temperature was 20.6°C. Misty conditions are expected on Monday morning, with temperatures hovering around 33°C during the day and 21°C at night.

Residents Urged to Celebrate Responsibly

Authorities have appealed to residents to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali, emphasizing the use of green crackers, carpooling, and indoor celebrations to reduce pollution levels. Health experts advise citizens — especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions — to stay indoors and wear masks if stepping out.
