A devastating fire engulfed a private bus travelling from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur on Tuesday afternoon, killing at least 20 passengers and injuring over a dozen others.

The incident occurred around 3 PM when smoke was spotted billowing from the rear of the bus, prompting the driver to halt the vehicle on the roadside. Within moments, flames spread rapidly, trapping passengers inside.

The bus was carrying 57 people. Locals and passers-by rushed to help, while fire tenders and police arrived promptly. The injured were initially taken to Jawahar Hospital in Jaisalmer, with 16 critically wounded later referred to Jodhpur for advanced care. Preliminary investigations suggest a short circuit may have triggered the blaze.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, announcing ₹2 lakh ex-gratia for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. Vice President CP Radhakrishnan and other national leaders also extended condolences.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma visited the site, cancelling a campaign event to oversee relief operations. He praised the swift action of army personnel and local residents.

District Collector Pratap Singh coordinated emergency medical aid and issued helpline numbers for affected families.

Political leaders across party lines, including Governor Haribhau Bagade and former CM Ashok Gehlot, expressed grief over the tragedy.

The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter safety checks on long-distance buses.
