A mentally ill woman was abducted from a roadside shelter near Charampa Reserve Police Barracks in Bhadrak district and raped inside a moving truck.
Mohammad Saddam Hussain from Jhumpura, Keonjhar abducted the woman and drove away in his truck. She screamed for help, but no one heard her because of the late hour.
He parked the truck nearby and assaulted her inside the vehicle. A video of the incident surfaced the next day and triggered an investigation by Bhadrak Town Police.
Police retrieved CCTV footage from surrounding areas and toll gates. They contacted truck owners and employee unions to identify the vehicle.
Police arrested Saddam and recorded his confession during interrogation. They also questioned the truck owner, Chittaranjan Pradhan, who denied knowing about the crime.
Locals found the woman abandoned near Randia’s Vedanta gate on Andapur Road. Police rescued her and placed her in a shelter for destitute women.
Social worker Chaitali Khilar observed the victim’s behavior and statements and confirmed signs of sexual assault. The woman’s mental instability prevented her from sharing complete details.
Police filed a case and arranged counseling for the victim. Investigators continue to pursue leads and pledged to take strict action.
