Aryan Khan, son of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, makes his much-anticipated directorial debut with The Ba**ds of Bollywood*, which premiered on Netflix today at 12:30 PM IST.
Produced under Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment banner, the series offers a sharp, satirical look at the inner workings of the Hindi film industry.
A Fresh Perspective from Aryan Khan
Aryan, 27, a graduate of USC School of Cinematic Arts, has chosen to stay behind the camera, defying speculation about an acting career. This series marks his first major project as creator, writer, and director. His only prior acting appearance was as a child actor in Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and as the voice of Simba in Disney’s The Lion King (Hindi dub).
Theme: Nepotism and Stardom
As hinted in the trailer, the series explores two parallel narratives — the lives of “nepo babies” (those born in film families) and self-made stars who fought their way to fame. Lakshya (of Kill fame) leads the cast as the quintessential outsider-turned-hero, while Sahher Bambba portrays the privileged daughter of a Bollywood superstar, played by Bobby Deol.
Ensemble Cast and Cameos
The show features an impressive ensemble including Raghav Juyal, Anya Singh, Mona Singh, Manoj Pahwa, Gautami Kapoor, and Manish Chaudhari. Celebrity cameos from Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar, SS Rajamouli, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Ranveer Singh, Disha Patani, and rapper Badshah add extra star power.
Premiere Night Glittered with Bollywood Royalty
The Mumbai premiere turned into a star-studded affair. Along with the Khan family, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Tamannaah Bhatia, Bhumi Pednekar, Kajol, Ajay Devgn, Madhuri Dixit, Ananya Panday, Navya Naveli Nanda, and Khushi Kapoor attended the event, showing industry-wide support.
Industry Reactions Pour In
The show is already drawing praise from leading voices in the industry. Filmmaker Rahul Dholakia called it “entertaining and spoofy goofy,” while choreographer Farah Khan hailed Aryan as “the most hardworking director I’ve ever worked with.” Karan Johar penned an emotional tribute on Instagram, saying Aryan has “an individual style of telling stories” and praising his two-year effort to bring the project to life.
Audience Anticipation High
With its mix of humor, celebrity cameos, and meta-commentary on Bollywood’s culture of nepotism and stardom, The Ba**ds of Bollywood* is expected to become a binge-worthy hit. Netflix and Red Chillies Entertainment are betting big on the show as one of their flagship Indian originals for 2025.
