The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a decline in rainfall intensity across Odisha over the next 24 hours, as the low-pressure system that brought widespread showers has moved inland towards Vidarbha.

IMD Director Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that while light showers will continue over the next seven days, heavy, widespread rain is not expected in the immediate term.

New Weather System Likely Around Sept 20

Mohapatra also flagged the possible formation of a fresh low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal around September 20.

“There lies a possibility of wind gusts forming, but a cyclone is unlikely at this stage. The forecast will become clearer in the coming days,” he said, adding that the system’s movement and intensity will depend on evolving meteorological conditions.

No Extreme Weather Threat

He reassured that Odisha faces no immediate cyclone or extreme weather threat. The previous low-pressure system, which caused heavy rainfall in coastal and western districts, has now shifted towards north Telangana and Vidarbha, leading to a gradual reduction in rainfall across the state.

Localised Showers May Continue

Despite the easing rainfall trend, IMD has warned of localised heavy showers and thunderstorms, particularly in flood-prone and low-lying areas. Authorities will continue monitoring the Bay of Bengal for any significant developments that could impact coastal and inland regions.
