Pakistan’s Champions Trophy journey ended in disappointment as their final Group A game against Bangladesh was abandoned due to rain in Rawalpindi on Thursday, February 27.

The 2017 champions concluded their campaign without a single victory, making them the first team in 23 years to be knocked out of the marquee 50-over tournament without a win.

Persistent drizzle and unfit outfield conditions led to the early abandonment of the match, much to the disappointment of fans who had turned up to watch Pakistan play in a major event at home after nearly three decades. The city had been experiencing rainfall since Thursday morning, affecting the game.

Pakistan, hosting an ICC tournament for the first time in nearly three decades, finished at the bottom of Group A with only one point and a negative Net Run Rate (-1.087). From Group A, India and New Zealand advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Pakistan’s campaign saw a challenging start as they lost to New Zealand by 60 runs in their opening game in Karachi and faced a six-wicket defeat against arch-rivals India in Dubai in a must-win contest.

This result marked an unwanted record for Pakistan, highlighting the challenges and pressures faced by the host nation in the highly competitive Champions Trophy.
