IMD Warns of Heavy Rain in Odisha, Yellow Alert for All 30 Districts

The prolonged spell of rain in Odisha is set to continue, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting widespread showers and thunderstorms across the state over the next four days.

Yellow Alert Statewide

According to the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, rainfall activity will intensify from Sunday, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph. A yellow warning has been issued for all 30 districts of Odisha, valid until September 3.

Districts on Special Watch

Five districts—Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri—have been placed on special alert due to the likelihood of very heavy downpours. On September 1, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj face the risk of extremely heavy rainfall.

Cause of the Wet Spell

Meteorologists attribute the persistent showers to a cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal, which has developed into a low-pressure system. This system is fueling strong monsoon currents, leading to continuous rainfall in Odisha.

Forecast Ahead

  • August 31 – September 2: Heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in several districts, with the peak intensity expected over the next 48 hours.

  • September 3: Statewide yellow alert will remain in place, with thunderstorms and lightning forecast.

  • September 4 onwards: Gradual improvement in weather conditions expected.

Possible Impact

The IMD cautioned that heavy rainfall combined with thunderstorms and lightning may disrupt road travel, damage weak structures, and harm standing crops in affected regions.
