Plastic-free enforcement in Nuapada

During Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida’s official visit to Nuapada district on the 4th of this month, a surprising disciplinary action drew public attention.

The District Collector, committed to making Nuapada plastic-free, imposed a Rs 500 fine on the District Social Welfare Officer for using a plastic bottle during the event.

The incident occurred amidst growing efforts to eliminate single-use plastics from government functions. The Collector’s swift action has sparked widespread discussion across departments, with many officials now reevaluating their practices. Locals have also voiced support, noting that such enforcement sends a strong message about environmental accountability.

Observers noted that plastic usage was visible at multiple venues during the Deputy CM’s tour, prompting the Collector to enter “action mode.” The fine, though modest, has had a ripple effect—prompting other officials and staff to adopt more sustainable habits.

This move is being seen as a symbolic yet impactful step toward institutional discipline and environmental responsibility. The Collector’s stance has reportedly made other departments more cautious, with many officers now “on alert” to avoid similar penalties.
