Rourkela: National Institute of Technology(NIT) Rourkela has secured 664th rank globally, 167th rank in Asia and 19th in India in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025.
78 universities/institutes from India have been listed in this ranking, of which NIT Rourkela stands out as the top-ranked NIT. Compared to the 2024 rankings, where the institute was placed 676th globally and 21st in India, NIT Rourkela has made significant progress this year.
Using a methodology comprised of indicators designed to measure an institution’s ability to tackle the world’s greatest environmental, social and governance (ESG) challenges, the QS Sustainability Rankings 2025 features nearly 1,800 universities from around the world.
To this accomplishment, Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao (Director, NIT Rourkela) remarked, “NIT Rourkela has been recognized once again in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability. This growth in ranking reflects our dedication to sustainable practices and social responsibility. Our focus is on building a campus that seamlessly integrates sustainability into both academic and daily life. I appreciate students, faculty, and staff, whose actions drive us closer to a greener, more sustainable future. I also acknowledge the Sustainable Development Goals Committee of NIT Rourkela for their continuous efforts. As we move forward, NIT Rourkela is determined to research, innovations and lead impactful initiatives, that address global sustainability challenges.”
This recognition highlights the success of our ongoing initiatives, such as dedicating 2 hours per week to Clean Campus Swachhata Drive (completing the 89th week to date), encouraging research and incubating start-ups aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting good governance, creating awareness about physical and mental health in the campus, significantly enhancing the greenery through the plantation and plastic-free campus drive etc.
