New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the United States for a three-day trip next weekend to participate in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) leaders’ summit, which will be hosted by President Joe Biden at his Delaware residence, according to officials.
PM Modi is scheduled to arrive in the US on September 21, coinciding with the date of the summit involving the four nations.
The upcoming gathering will mark the fourth face-to-face Quad summit, with President Biden hosting the government leaders from the partner nations of Australia and Japan.
Joining PM Modi at the summit in Wilmington, Delaware, will be Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
“President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. will convene the fourth in-person Quad Leaders Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday, September 21. The President is eager to receive Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, and Prime Minister Kishida Fumio of Japan,” stated White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
She further noted, “This occasion will be President Biden’s inaugural hosting of international leaders in Wilmington during his presidency—a testament to his close personal rapport with each of the Quad Leaders and the significance of the Quad for our nations. Over the past years, Quad Foreign Ministers have convened eight times, with Quad governments persistently engaging and coordinating across various levels.”
Earlier in July, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar participated in the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting held in Tokyo.
“The Quad Leaders Summit aims to strengthen strategic alignment among our nations, promote our collective vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific, and provide tangible benefits to Indo-Pacific partners in crucial areas. These areas encompass health security, response to natural disasters, maritime security, high-quality infrastructure, critical and emerging technologies, climate and clean energy, and cybersecurity,” highlighted Jean-Pierre.
In November 2017, India, Japan, the US, and Australia formalized the long-awaited Quad initiative to devise a new strategy that ensures the critical sea routes in the Indo-Pacific remain free from any influence.
In addition to participating in the Quad Summit and engaging in bilateral discussions with the leaders of the partner nations, Prime Minister Modi will attend an event for the Indian community in New Jersey on September 22 and take part in the Summit of the Future on September 23.
The Summit of the Future is set to yield an intergovernmental, action-focused Pact for the Future, featuring chapters on sustainable development, financing for development, international peace and security, science, technology and innovation, digital cooperation, youth and future generations, and the transformation of global governance, as detailed on the United Nations’ official website.
